The Hangover part 3 – Movie Review

Image

It’s Over

Jon Lucas and Scott Moore created the hilarious characters that made up the wolf pack in the hangover. The best of them was Zach Galifianakis but then director Todd Phillips teamed up with Craig Mazin to write hangover 2 & 3 and it all went downhill. I saw hangover 2 last week and the lack of good writing showed. It wasn’t even half as funny as the first one so I was prepared for the worst when I sat to down to watch part 3.

This time there is no phone call saying “it’s happened again” there is no waking up not knowing what happened. Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu( Ed Helms) reluctantly agree to go with Doug ( Justin Bartha) and Alan ( Zach Galifianakis) for Alan’s intervention programme in Arizona. They get kidnapped on the way and Doug is held captive by Marshall( John Goodman). To save Doug the wolf pack has to get Mr. Chow who has stolen Marshall’s gold and has escaped from the prison.

Since Alan and Mr Chow were the most popular characters from the 1st film the screenplay is resting on their shoulders to provide the laughs. Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms end up as supporting cast to Zach Galifianakis.

By not sticking to the device of the original Todd Phillips loses the entire point of making this film but at the same time takes a bigger risk to give it a darker tone rather than adopting the tried and tested route.

Look it at a different film with the same characters. Some of the jokes will be lost on you if you have not seen part 1 & 2. My advice to the makers would be if they are thinking of a part 4(wait for the end credits) then they should get back the writers of the 1st film.

Word of mouth – There are some characters you like visiting at the movies, the wolf pack is one of them. Don’t expect much, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Go Goa Gone – Movie Review

Go-Goa-Gone-posters

Deadly Funny

Go Goa gone is touted as India’s first zom com (zombie comedy) but as far as I remember most of Ramsay’s ghosts were zombies. It’s another matter that probably even Ramsay’s didn’t know they were called zombies. Also, Luke Kenny’s Rise of the zombies released this year. So, technically this film is the 2nd zombie film.

Two things impressed me the most in the film first is Kunal Khemu. He is the star of the film. 2nd are the dialogues. I waited for the end credits to find out who has written the dialogues. To my surprise I found out that Kunal Khemu is credited along with Sita Menon for the Hindi dialogues. He has saved the best lines for himself.

Vir Das is Luv, Kunal Khemu is Hardik ( yes there is a joke on the name) and Anand Tiwari is Bunny. They stay together and work together. Bunny is the seeda saada amongst the three. Hardik is the horny one who dopes, drinks and gets fired because his boss ( played by Aatma director Suparn Verma) catches him red handed with a girl from the office. Luv wants to clean up and on the day he proposes to his girlfriend he gets dumped. Both of them tag along with Bunny on his official trip to Goa. There Luv meets Luna played by Puja Gupta (yes there is a scooty joke ) . Luna is Luv’s face book friend. She invites him for an underground rave party. At the party, a party drug gone wrong turns most of the people into zombies. From here on it is all about the fight for survival for the four of them with some help from the Delhi se nakli Russian Boris (Saif Ali Khan).

Though the screenplay is weak, repetitive and meandering after a point Director’s Raj and DK keeps the fun quotient in check right till the end. They seemed to be having a blast making this film. Thanks to the censor board the film is what it is. I can’t imagine the film if the censor’s would have gone chop chop on most of the lines. Except Vir Das ( Strictly okay) and Puja Gupta ( the glam quotient) the entire cast is a blast but Kunal Khemu stands out. He makes even the weakest scene come alive with his comic timing. This can be the film that can give his career a turbo power boost up.

Word of mouth – Go Goa Gone is the Delhi belly of this year with zombies as an added attraction

Rating – *** ½ (Superb just go for it)
